What's Wool All About?

It's known that slippers are just for the winter months because apparently, it's too hot in the spring and summer to wear them. But actually, this is not the case. Wool-based products like Cilla & Jon from Shepherd of Sweden. Our very own wool moccasins or our luxury ranges of Magicfelt and Stegmann wool slippers and clogs, have supernatural abilities making them perfect to wear all year round.

Wool is 100% natural and a material that is reusable and recyclable. It's eco-friendly and kind to our planet. It also has some amazing properties; such as moisture-wicking, wrinkle-resistant and naturally breathable.

In contrast to synthetics, wool is an active fibre that reacts to changes in body temperature. So it helps you stay warm when the weather is cold, and cool when the weather is hot. So why does wool have supernatural benefits? Well, that's because each wool fibre has a complex chemical structure.

Without getting too technical, wool fibres come in a variety of diameters. The thicker the diameter, the less the wool can bend. Finer yarns of wool bend more easily, making them soft. These types of fibres are used for clothing and footwear products.

In footwear, the most important part of a wools chemical structure is the Ortho-cortex and Para-cortex. These cells form the core of the wool fibre. The arrangement of the cells causes a wave in the wool fibre and traps air providing insulation. Which produces wool fabrics that keep us warm during winter and then helps keep the hot air out in the summer.

Wool fibres also have tiny overlapping scales, which surround the wool fibre. Moisture vapour penetrates beneath these scales, allowing the fibre to 'breathe' and us to feel cooler when it's hotter.

So next someone questions you why you're wearing your wool slippers in the high of the summer, you now have the knowledge to tell them why. For our full range of wool slippers, take a look at the links below.

Until next time.
